Beginning of a small study, 18″ X 18″, a change of pace from the water pieces. As you can see this is just washed in with thin turpentine washes. The image is from a trip in ’09, and has always interested me as being so painting like, with the ‘weeds’ spilling over the rocks like poured paint.  This is also supported by the relatively flat space, which I hope to emphasize. The color is excessively contrasting, in value, at this point. I hope to punch up the saturation as it develops, thinking of a palette which may hopefully border on a sense of being synthetic…however that may develop. The color always seems to come in an undirected fashion, not as surprising as often as I would wish.

Cezanne is coming to mind, with occasional grace notes from Courbet.
