I’ve been doing quick, 20 minute, watercolor studies from the model for the past few weeks; almost as visual calisthenics. It is demanding, requiring intense observation and very quick decisions about color and shape. I make it a rule to work directly with the colored shapes, doing no preliminary drawing. The process is the point, the small paintings are most usually incomplete and problematic in terms of drawing!!
My wife, Dolores Coe, and I did these frequently many years ago, sharing a model with a small group of friends every week or so. It was always a pleasure, to sit afterward with a wall full of studies and discuss them. Here’s another very quick one, from a few weeks ago.
