A large piece based on photos of an intersection in Ruskin, Florida. A really key painting in terms of my series involving the local suburban/rural hybrid environment. The painting was a long time in making; as I slowly worked my way through the descriptions of the elements. This involved a good deal of editing and simplifying. I do use a gridded image to guide my painting, but it is never a point by point ‘transcription’, a la Chuck Close. There is always a measure of invention in finding the shapes and colors which are credible and which build a sense of the place I’m trying to create.
